THE CORNFRONTATION HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Cornfrontation Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history, traditions, and enduring rivalry that grew from the Great Kernel Controversy of 1890. Through historical research, archived publications, and annual symposiums, the Society celebrates the people, places, and stories that continue to unite—and divide—the Corn Belt.

THE GREAT KERNEL CONTROVERSY

A disagreement that divided the Corn Belt.

What began as a seemingly ordinary dispute over corn quickly grew into one of the most enduring rivalries in Midwestern history.

By 1890, farmers, merchants, civic leaders, and agricultural societies had taken sides. Arguments spilled from meeting halls into newspapers, county fairs, and town squares. What followed became known simply as the Cornfrontation.

More than a century later, the debate continues.

THE ANNUAL CORNFRONTATION SYMPOSIUM

The debate continues.

More than a century after the first dispute, the Cornfrontation remains a living tradition.

Each year, historians, farmers, enthusiasts, and committed partisans gather to revisit the controversy, examine new evidence, defend the honor of their chosen side, and continue one of the Midwest’s most enduring arguments.
